Boycott Dirty Final Fantasy Confessions!

I’m sure most of us have seen the blog. The purpose is for Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts fans to anonymously submit their sexual confessions relating to the fandom.

The blog has been active since late November. Since then, there have been multiple submissions portraying sexual assault. I myself decided to ignore the blog in its entirety, even though the trend of “rape glorification” in fandoms makes me angry beyond belief. Also present on the blog is a considerable amount of gender stereotyping, which makes me angry as a member of the LGBQT* community.

Recently (January 17, 2012), a fanfiction was posted of The Emperor [FFII] using Kefka Palazzo’s slave crown to rape Terra Branford [FFVI]. The word “rape” was not included in the fanfiction, but the sexual act was clearly nonconsensual. One may have been confused as to whether or not such an act really was rape, because Terra started liking it halfway through (which, by the way, NEVER happens in real life).

Let’s get something straight. It’s rape if the person says no, or has to be “dominated.” There’s no such thing as a willing rape victim. Also, rape isn’t sexy.

PLEASE KEEP ALL OF THE FOLLOWING IN MIND:

  • This is not the full extent of the blog’s references to assault.
  • It’s not possible to “tenderly” or “passionately” dominate someone.
  • Some of these examples, like 14, require context (Tseng and Elena were, at that point, the Remnants’ prisoners) and that some, like 9, may have implied mutual consent.
  • Considering that this blog is submission-based, it is unlikely that the moderators are the creators of this content. They are, however, responsible for what gets made public and should therefore take down the disturbing material.

PLEASE KEEP ALL OF THE FOLLOWING IN MIND:

  • No two people are the same; what may not offend one person may offend another.
  • Saying “I’m a [boy/girl] and I would do ________ to [character of same sex] implies the idea that homosexuality/homoeroticism is “weird” in some way, shape, or form.
  • Sexuality is not straight/bi/gay. It’s okay to be straight and still have homoerotic tendencies, and it’s okay to be gay and have heteroerotic tendencies.
  • There are characters in Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts who do not adhere to the enforced “qualities” of their gender. This does NOT make her/him weak in any regard.

One of my friends was greatly disturbed by the aforementioned Terra fanfiction. I made the decision to put the blog on Tumblr Savior long ago and wouldn’t even have known about the recent post if someone had not sent me a message saying, “Did you see that Terra fic?” I read through it and instantly felt sick.

Dirty Final Fantasy Confessions has always posted their submissions, including the harmful material, without trigger warnings of any sort. Their submission guidelines (screenshot taken on January 19, 2012) do not include limits to what people can submit. The story guidelines (screenshot taken on January 19, 2012) contain a similar lack of boundaries.

Upon reading the Terra fanfiction, I took an “enough is enough” approach to the blog’s content. I sent an ask to the blog, requesting that they remove the fanfiction as well AS WELL AS ANY OTHER MATERIAL THAT WOULD REQUIRE A TRIGGER WARNING. The following conversation ensued.

MORE THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

  • Nowhere on the blog does it say that posts about rape will be deleted.
  • The story guidelines (link posted above) state that moderators - that’s plural - will have read the story before posting it. This moderator had no idea of the post’s content, and I presume that s/he did not check.
  • It turns out I am NOT the only one who sent a message to the blog about the Terra fanfiction. My friend requested the post be deleted two days before I did.
  • This is a real-life issue, and it can’t be solved just by unfollowing or “getting over it.”

I highly doubt that the offensive material will be removed.

This is where you come in. If you are against the fandom’s rape glorification and/or gender stereotyping, boycott Dirty Final Fantasy Confessions. Don’t send things to the blog at all, regardless of the content of your submissions. If the material bothers you, then unfollow. Most importantly, tell others in any Final Fantasy community you may be a part of (liveblogging, art, roleplaying, et cetera) that the moderators of this blog are handling the content poorly.

HERE IS A LIST OF WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH.

  1. We want to spread awareness that rape glorification and gender stereotyping are WRONG, even in fictional media and fan communities.
  2. We want the moderators of Dirty Final Fantasy Confessions to take responsibility for the things that they have posted and delete the offensive material from their blog.
  3. We want the moderators of Dirty Final Fantasy Confessions to promise that they will not post anything that would legitimately require a trigger warning.

Rape, abuse, and gender stereotyping are very real problems. They won’t go away by unfollowing. No one should have to settle for putting up with the fandom’s frightening preoccupation for something that’s been deemed “cool” or even “cute.” Speak out, and assert your right to have a fandom that’s safe for everyone.
